After a dental implant is placed, Dr. Mark Ryser and Dr. Richard Shamo will happily give you post-op instructions and advice for your recovery period. This will ensure that your recovery time is as smooth and comfortable as possible.

We recommend taking an anti-inflammatory medication, such as ibuprofen or Advil, before the local anesthetic wears off. Our surgeon may also prescribe a stronger pain medication. Take this as instructed.

After implant surgery, minimal bleeding is expected. Place gauze over the surgery site and gently bite down for 30 minutes. Rest with your head elevated. Use the gauze for an additional 30 minutes if bleeding continues. Pink or blood-tinged saliva may occur for 2 to 3 days. This is not a problem. Your sutures may last for 2 to 3 days and should be left alone.

After surgery, begin with liquids, applesauce, pudding, or Jell-o. After the numbness wears off, slowly work up to solid foods, chewing on the side oposite of the treatment site.

Swelling is a natural part of the healing process. About 24 hours after surgery, the swelling will become apparent. It will reach its peak after 2 or 3 days, and may persist for 7 to 10 days. To minimize swelling, begin using ice packs immediately after surgery. For the first 24 hours, apply an ice pack to the outside of the face for 20 minutes and then remove for 20 minutes.

To ensure healing, it is important that you keep your mouth clean. Thoroughly but gently clean your mouth after every meal beginning the day after surgery using a soft bristled toothbrush and toothpaste. Do not rinse your mouth on the day of surgery.

Rest from all physical activity for the first 48 hours following surgery. After that, you may resume activity with discretion.
