Dr. Mark Ryser, Dr. Richard Shamo, and our team are committed to providing dental implant placement and jaw surgery in Lehi, Utah. To place a dental implant, a dental implant post is surgically placed in the jawbone. During the healing process, the jawbone will fuse with the dental implant. This makes it a permanent part of the smile. However, sometimes the jaw does not have sufficient bone structure to support the implant post. In this case, our cosmetic surgeon may need to perform jaw surgery.
When there is not enough bone structure in the lower jaw, a bone graft may be needed. This surgical procedure transplants bone structure and encourages the growth of bone in the jaw. Once the jaw has healed, a dental implant post can be placed. If there is not enough bone structure in the upper arch, a sinus lift may be required. During this surgery, the sinus membrane is moved upward to allow room for more bone. The bone graft is then placed between the jaw and the maxillary sinuses. Once the bone has healed, the dental implant post can be surgically placed in the enhanced bone structure.
